People are generally aware of what is good and what is bad for them; for example, staying in the sun too long can get you sun burnt. Advertisements also help tell us what we should be taking and what we shouldn’t. But you won’t believe some things that are bad for you!
Here are ten things that you had no idea are bad for you:
1. Sunscreens increase the chances of cancer
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) published their 2014 guide to safe sunscreens. They reviewed over 2000 sunscreens and over 257 brands. They found that more than 75% of the sunscreens contained toxic chemicals that can increase the risk of cancer and other health issues.
2. Skimmed milk is not better than whole-fat milk
People who eat full-fat dairy are no more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes than people who stick to low-fat dairy. It is also said that whole-fat milk is more likely to make you feel full for a longer time.
3. Drinking too much water can kill you
When a person drinks too much water in a short period of time, the kidneys cannot flush it out fast enough and the blood becomes waterlogged. Also, drinking too much water may wash down important substances that your body needs.
4. Jogging on hard surfaces like concrete can give you knee problems
While jogging is good for your health, jogging on a hard surface increases the stress of impact exaggerated by the hard surface on the knee. It can also cause injuries like shin pain and blisters.
5. A massage can aggravate your body ailments
If you experience pain in a body part, there are chances that a massage will aggravate the problem. A doctor must be consulted before getting a massage.
6. Anti-ageing products do more harm than good
Anti-aging products typically contain hydroxy acids, Bisabolol and Limonene to increase the permeability of the skin but these are skin irritants and can make the user vulnerable to sunburns.
7. Brown bread is not healthy
While it may be healthier than your normal white bread, it is not as healthy as you think. Most brown breads have ingredients that are used to make white breads. Moreover, it is loaded with Gluten, and spikes blood sugar levels rapidly.
8. Cereals are unhealthy for you
Beneficial unsaturated fatty acids and proteins like the amino acid lysine are dissolved and lost in the process of producing cereals. The only thing left in cereals is high level of sugars.
9. Plastic Bottles can make your water toxic
Single-use plastic bottles should not be used because they leach chemicals, especially when they come in contact with heat. Some of these chemicals are possible endocrine disruptors.
10. Air Fresheners can cause Asthma
Air fresheners are incredibly toxic and can aggravate lot of respiratory problems like asthma. Even those labeled ‘natural’ contain phthalates, chemicals that cause hormonal abnormalities, reproductive problems and birth defects.
