Here are eleven cricket controversies which shocked the cricket world !
Indian player Harbhajan Singh called Andrew Symonds a monkey which was seen as a racial slur banning Singh for three months. But the move was overturned after India’s appeal to the ICC.
2. Sydney riot of 1879
A controversial decision caused an uproar during an Australia vs England match where the the English bowler dismissed the Australian batsman.
3. South Africa lose to rain
In 1993 on South Africa’s world cup debut they were knocked out in the semi final due to rain. The ICC’s ‘highest overs scoring’ rule calculated a target of 22 from one ball which left a bad taste in South Africa’s mouth.
4. Time wasting tactics
In the 2009 Ashes Australian captain was accused of time wasting by sending Andrew Strauss twice sent 12th man Bilal Shafayat out into the middle. Strauss said :
“There was a lot of confusion. We firstly sent the 12th man out to let Jimmy and Monty know there was time left and not just the overs. Then the drinks spilt on his glove and Jimmy called up to the dressing room and we weren’t sure whether we needed the 12th man or the physio – so we sent both out.”
5. Leg theory vs bodyline
leg theory involved the ball being bowled towards the body of the batsman in line with the leg stump. That strategy knocked many of the Australian batters unconscious and left the others severely bruised. It was later revised
6. Sri Lanka wins!
Australia and West Indies opted to forfeit their games against Sri Lanka due to terror threats. Sending Sri Lanka into the finals beating Australia by seven points
7. Zimbabwe protest
Zimbabwe skipper Andy Flower and Henry Olonga wore black patches on their arm for the ‘Death of democracy” in protest of Robert Mugabe’s presidency.
8. Bob Woolmer’s death
Woolmer was found dead in his hotel after being Pakistan’s. There was going to be a murder investigation but there was insufficent evidence.
9. Spot Fixing
Asif and Amir both bowled unusually big no-balls, overstepping by around a foot at times. This cuaght the attention of ooficials who found out that the two players were involved in a spot fixing scandal
10. Harbhajan v Sreesanth
Two Indian cricketers who played together went against each other physically in the IPL when Harbhajan slapped Sreesanth.
11. India vs Sri Lanka
In the semi final of a 1996 World cup in Kolkatta India were winning against Sri Lanka, but then started losing badly after Sahcin Tendulkar got out. This caused riots and people started throwing bottles and lighting fires.
