14 Things Every 20-Year-Old Should Know About Life

When I was 20-years-old I was very naive. I thought things would go a certain way in my life, I would be in a certain place, earn a certain amount of money, be some place good in my life. But sadly that is not true.

Here are something I wish I knew when I was 20-years-old:

1. Don’t expect things to be handed down to you

Yes, growing up things were handed down to us quite easily. We got whatever we wanted as children but life isn’t going to be like that forever. Expecting to land a job, ace a test or even get the girl without putting in a little hard work and you’re bound to be disappointed.

2. Expecting to love your job

You’re not always going to enjoy work. If you’re lucky enough to do what you love, good for you but for the rest of us it’s not going to be that easy. But that’s okay. Realise that you are not in this alone not everyone likes doing what they do for money.

3. Feeling entitled

If you feel like you deserve that promotion, that lucky draw or that last slice of pizza then expect to be upset because you don’t always deserve it. Thinking that you do will set you up for disappointment.

4. Stop comparing yourself to others

If you think someone has a better life than you because of the things they post on Facebook then trust me they aren’t having that much fun. Especially if they have the time to post it on Facebook. Remember, no one posts details about their sad life on social media.

5. Stop playing the blame game

Take responsibility for your actions. Don’t play the victim. Not everything wrong in your life is everyone else’s fault.

6. Don’t dwell on the past

You made a mistake? Learn from it. Shit happens. Move on. Don’t get stuck in the past, look towards the future.

7. Learn from your mistakes

Everyone makes mistake in life, you’ve just got to learn from them. Made a mistake? Good, now you know how to not do something.

8. Don’t try to fix other people

Everyone around you is fighting a personal battle you know nothing about; they aren’t looking for you to fix them, so please don’t. Again focus on yourself, not others.

9. Don’t talk yourself down

We all have that negative voice inside our head putting us down. FIGHT IT! Don’t let it win. You can do what ever you can, you don’t look bad, people don’t hate you. Stop listening to that voice!

10. Stop hanging out with negative Nancys’

You know who I’m talking about. Those friends who are always complaining and nothing goes right in their lives. Yeah avoid them, they’ll just bog you down and make you think like them.

11. Don’t focus on what you don’t have

We have a tendency to look at what we don’t have and not be grateful for what we do have. Do understand that there are people without parents, be happy if you have both of yours.

12. Don’t wait for someone else to make you happy

Your happiness is within you. Whatever your situation is, if you’re not happy that’s on you. Don’t expect someone to come and change your life for the better. That only happens in movies not in real life.

13. Stop living to other’s expectations

Your life is yours, no one else’s. You should be able to do whatever you want and not feel like you’re living your life for someone else. Do what you want to do, not what someone else feels you should do. Live someone else’s life and you’ll never be happy.

14. Stop worrying

Worrying never solved anything. There’s definitely no point in wasting your time worrying, my friend.
