Can you imagine, as a kid, sitting at home all day and swiping away at a paper sized device? I know, I couldn’t. Staying at home was the most boring thing I could do. Watching cartoons was fun but being outside and playing all those fun and pointless games beat everything else. Kids nowadays don’t know what they’re missing.
So, reminiscing the good ol’ days, here is a list of all the outdoor games Pakistanis played as kids!
1. Pakram pakrai
The desi version of ‘tag you’re it’! When the ‘chor’ catches a person they yell ‘pakar liya’!
2. Chupan Chupai
Urdu for Hide-and-seek.
“Kho pe kho dou! Kho pe kho!”
4. Baraf pani
You have to run from the ‘chor’ but if s/he catches up to you and tags you ‘baraf’ you’ll remain in statue position unless a teammate tags you ‘pani’. And when everyone is ‘baraf’, it’s game over!
5. Oonch neech
You need to get to a height of sorts before the ‘chor’ catches you!
6. Dark Room
Hide and seek but with the addition of a dark room.
The chants of the kids, “Maar! Jaldi maar!”
How good were you at it?
This particular game had a jingle with so many variations and it was something we could do anywhere!
Not only the kids but the elders would join in the fun as well. Maybe it was a way to make us sit in one place for a while.
11. Ringa Ringa Roses.
I think this needs to no explanation.
12. Cheel uri
Cheel uri *raises finger*
Kawwa ura *raises finger*
Maina uri *raises finger*
Kursi uri *raises finger* You’re out!
13. Ice-cream soda lemon squash, tell me the name of *alphabets*
14. Ghora Jamal Shahi Jisne Aagay dekha maar khaii
Desi version of ‘I sent a letter’. The anticipation was the real deal, who’ll be next?!
15. Dot Dot
This was a test of your skills and fun to play at the same time.
16. What colour do you choose?
This game was a convenient go-to game when we were bored and in a car or when we weren’t allowed to go outside. Especially during class in school!
17. Which finger is this?
The challenge that determines if you have a sharp eye. If you got the answer right, you were the boss!
18. Tyre run
You saw a spare bike or any tyre, you did this!
