There is a ban in France where a person can not cover their face. It’s an act of parliament which was passed in 2010 and affects Muslim women who wear niqabs.
But there is one man in France who is opposed to this law and has been paying the fines women face for wearing the niqab. This mans name is Rachid Nekkaz who has the nick name “Zorro of the niqab.”
“I personally am against the niqab and the burkini, but I am like the philosopher Voltaire. Once I do not agree, I will fight to the death to give the possibility to these people to express their opinion or to dress as they please. That is freedom. It is a question of principle.”
Mr Nekkaz has paid out €245,000 in fines and associated legal fees, and has picked up the tab for 1,165 women in France, 268 in Belgium, two in the Netherlands, and one in Switzerland.
Mr Nekkaz finds that this sort of politics where peoples freedom to wear what they want is taken away is:
“The types of decisions which do not respect fundamental liberties will create new clients for the Islamic State (Isil),”
Mr Nekkaz is in for a long battle with the government and has said:
“I have means and I can boost it (the fund for fines) to two, three, or four million euros without any problem,”
Good luck to you Mr Nekkaz
