The Philippines this week elected its first transgender person to congressional office. She is not only continuing a family tradition, but achieving a national breakthrough.

Geraldine Roman, 49, is the scion of a powerful political family for the ruling Liberal party and she will take the lower house seat that was previously held by her mother.
