Hanan-al Hroub is a teacher in Palestine. She teaches primary school children in the West Bank city of al-Bireh, just outside of Ramallah.
She went into teaching after she saw her children witnessing a shooting on their way from home and that made her think how teachers can help children who experience this trauma.
She educates children about non-violence and has written a book called “We Play and Learn,” which focuses on the importance of playing, trust, respect, honesty and literacy.
The event was held in Dubai where Hanan won $1 million. After being announced as the winner she said:

“I did it, I won. Palestine won. All 10 of us have the power, we can change the world “
“I am proud to present to you the message of teachers of Palestine: There is no doubt that we live in unnatural conditions. Violence and Israeli occupation surrounds us from all sides and imposes itself and leaks to each corner of educational process and its components, so our task is complicated as we see daily the suffering in the eyes of our students and our teachers. We want our children to live peacefully, as all children of the world,”
