India’s First Transgender Principal

For the first time ever in India, or the world there will be a transgender person running a school as principal.

Manabi Bandopadhay was appointed as principal for Krishnanagar Women’s College and will start her duties on June 8, 2015.

Manabi had been working as a professor in Bengali at Vivekananda Satobarshiki Mahavidyalaya in West Bengal.

Manabi was the only son in her family and had a sex change operation in 2003 at the age of 38.

Colleagues and students only have praise for Manabi,

Manabi Bandopadhyay is a strong individual. She has faced many upheavals. We are optimistic about the development of the college during her tenure. She is a celebrity and her sexual orientation isn’t an issue for us

Many people are confident that Manabi will be a good principal. She did not seek out this role but it was offered to her and she accepted it. She plans to start work next month as soon as she leaves her current job.
