Sonu Nigam, the famous singer, who has given Bollywood with many melodious, hit songs, was part of a social experiment for a video titled ‘Road side Ustad’ that was released on Culture Machine’s digital channel Being Indian on Tuesday.
This experiment was conducted on the busy streets of Juhu, Mumbai to see the reactions of pedestrians to an old man singing.
Sonu broke all stereotypes proving to the world that super stars actually do care for their mass fan following. He disguised himself as a beggar and performed on a busy street, playing a harmonium in a corner, sitting beside a side board that said Khojna kya hai, khushiyan yahaan hai (Where are you searching for happiness, its right here). The beauty of his thought and his music moved those listening to him.
People did not recognise the master vocalist, but a small crowd gathered to listen to his melodious voice and appreciate his singing.
A young lad also asked him if he can record his voice, he shook hands with Sonu , asked him if he had eaten breakfast and gave him 12 rupees.
While talking about the reason behind the video Karl Katgara, the creative director at Culture Machine, said that
“The whole idea behind this experiment was to inspire people to take a moment out of their busy lives and appreciate the beauty of music. To do this, who better than Sonu Nigam. He is one of the most sought after singers in the country, and the most recognizable voice. What was interesting to see at the time was, he created the same magic singing, just disguised as an old man, and people could not recognise him at all.”
For Sonu this was a completely different experiment.
“It’s been one of the most enlightening and remarkable experiences of my life. This was me that was my voice the only difference was of the clothes I was wearing and the age I disguised myself into. The most memorable moment for me of this experience was of meeting a young lad who held my hand and asked me if I had eaten breakfast, and without telling anyone he put 12 rupees in my hand. I felt amazing. I felt like I have earned lakhs of rupees”
Sonu told his office to frame this memorable 12 rupees sohghat.
Sonu wished to meet him again and wants to give something back to him out of love!
He tweeted about this surreal crooning experience and thanked Being Indian.
