Iranian photographer Asghar Khamseh was awarded the L’Iris d’Or Photographer of the Year award at the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards for his series, Fire of Hatred. The powerful and disturbing photos show victims of acid attacks.

Maryam Zamani, 38, and Arezo Hashemi Nezhad, 13, Tehran
In 2010, while Maryam and her three daughters were attacked by her brother’s wife. Both Maryam and Arezo, one of her daughters, were completely disfigured.
Zivar Parvin, 37, Sarabeleh
After her husband died, her brother in law proposed her. When she refused him, he threw acid at her and her 18-year-old daughter, Yasra, while they were both asleep.
Mohsen Mortazavi, 34, Tehran.
Mohsen was stabbed 16 times by his coworker before he threw acid on him. He suspected Mohsen was behind the prank calls he had been receiving.
Mahnaz Kazemi, 39, Qom
Mahnaz decided to divorce her husband because of domestic violence. When he found out, he threw acid on her.
Shirin Mohamadi, 18, Tehran
She said no to her suitor. He threw acid on her.
Raana Por Amrai, 38 and Fatemeh Qalandari, 8, Kohdasht
Amrai’s brother-in-law threw acid on her and Fatemeh because he believed Amrai was responsible for his divorce.
Somayeh Mehri, 29, Bam.
She decide to divorceher husband. He threw acid on her face and body and her daughter, Raana who was 3-years-old. Somayeh died last year
Masoumeh Atai, 32, Esfahan
In 2008, she divorced her husband with one child. Two years later, she was attacked with acid by her ex-father-in-law.
