Dindim has this special bold with his human best friend because he saved Dindim’s life!

Joao lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro, he first met Dindim in 2011 when he found the penguin washed up on his local beach covered in oil and close to death. Joa took care of the injured penguin and nursed him back to life! He released Dindim back into the sea after a week, but the penguin had no intention of leaving.

But when he finally did, he reappeared to meet Joa after a year! And this has been happening ever since. Now for four years! In Brazil it is illegal to keep wild animals as pets, but Dindim swims thousands of miles each year to visit Joao Pereira de Souza, and spends eight months in every 12 with his human companion.

Joa loves him just as much, he says that:

“I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,” said Joao in an interiew with Globo TV. “No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks them if they do. He lays on my lap, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed him sardines and to pick him up.”

“Everyone said he wouldn’t return but he has been coming back to visit me for the past four years. He arrives in June and leaves to go home in February and every year he becomes more affectionate as he appears even happier to see me.”
